    Volunteer Teaching Kenya
Description: Teach English, Mathematics, Science and other subjects at our primary schools in urban and rural areas of Kenya. No teaching certificate is required, but native English speakers are preferred.
Your voluntary contribution to teach English as a second language in Kenya or to teach other subjects, will be highly appreciated and fulfilling to yourself. We work with a number of schools where teaching volunteers can be placed. Gracepatt Eco Tours Kenya teachers work under the supervision of an experienced member of the school teaching staff appointed by the Head Master.

Those volunteering for international teaching in Kenya are expected to have at least graduated from high school or be enrolled in a college. On completion of a mandatory overseas teaching orientation, the overseas volunteer teachers will be expected to work for between 4 to 5 hours a day.

The number of local teachers per school is normally small. In some schools the student to teacher ratios are so high, but sometimes in Kenya, thats the only chance the students have to learn and make something out of their lives.

The students range in age from 4 to 14 from pre-kindergarten to class 8.  For the younger children, you can help them with conversational English, basic math, arts & crafts, board games, playground games, sports like soccer and running, music, and any other talents you wish to share. For the older students, you can teach more formal subjects like English, science, math, and history. The school schedule is Monday-Friday from 8am to 4pm with a two-hour sports period from 3-5pm where the students do things like cross-country running, soccer, and basketball.
All classes are taught in English in Kenya.
Qualification: Native English speakers are preferred.

Volunteer in an orphanage in Kenya

Most of the our centers comprises of a home and a school. Once placed, a volunteer could decide to work in either of the departments – Cook for the children, feed them, teach them, help with laundry, mop the floor, give those who are sick their medication and soothe them to sleep one at a time. At present, the center is short of staff and most of the above chores are taken care of by a slim staff collectively with the children. The children are from different backgrounds hence, have different emotional problems in addition to societal effects that range from grinding poverty to HIV/AIDS. Others are from broken homes, where they were physically abused. This category of children together with those affected by HIV need special care, child psychiatric services and above all, friends whom they can trust and open up to – a motherly, fatherly, brotherly or a sisterly figure – a shoulder to lean on, sow hope and reap something in life. There are also those who have never known a mum or a dad – this are children who were either found abandoned by the road side or whose parents are long dead from HIV/AIDS. Therefore other than material insufficiencies, our children’s home are mix of emotions that needs every one of us.
This program would best suit any volunteer with a humane heart. Someone willing to reach out and inspire hope where there might be none, someone with a niche to leave the world a better place that he/she found it. This program would also suit groups of two to twenty volunteers with a common goal like fund raising to buy such home kitchen equipments or buy them enough food to take them through a month, six months or a year. Such groups of volunteers could initiate projects like painting the home, buying more beddings, toys, books, medicine, expand the home building wise to accommodate more children comfortably. This is because Kenya produces an orphan every five minutes as results of deaths from HIV/AIDS and other ailments. The program is also a superb training opportunity for those volunteers aspiring to take up community-based jobs in developing countries.
A volunteer’s presence alone at the home is in its self an enormous blessing to not only the children, but also Kenya as a whole. It would also be perfect for those looking for a set comprising of a school and a children’s home as a single package.
A carefully selected host family will provide for food and accommodation.
This volunteer placement is suitable for people from all walks and strips of life – with an interest in fellow human beings’ plights and sufferings. For young people, they should be able to bare hash realities of life with regard to the levels of suffering and situations the children live under.
